“I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is : and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. ” Revelation 2:13 God calls Christians pilgrims and strangers in a foreign land. I feel like a foreigner often these days as I see godly foundations of society crumble, greater antagonism to the true God and His Word, and the frightening thoughts of, “How bad will it get?”
The Christians of Pergamos, those addressed in our verse, may have felt the same way. God called the place where they lived Satan’s seat! It must have been pretty bad. But, notice that the Lord had a purpose for these believers to live and worship in that place. He was glorified and pleased that they had not compromised their faith in Christ, even when it meant bloodshed.
Though our world is dark, God has a purpose for you and I to be here. We are called to live in our occupations, families and churches in a way that honors the Lord in our sinful environment. Salt to the earth and light of the world is our calling. Genuine love for people coupled with uncompromising stands for truth are practical ways that we live that out. May God help you and me in our pilgrimage.
