“And hereby do we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him. ” I John 2:3, 4 Polls show that the vast majority of Americans claim the Christian faith, that is, they claim to know and love Christ. God’s word, however, here speaks plainly that mere claiming to know Christ is not always genuine. To really know Christ means that there will be a following of Christ, obedience to His word in one’s life.
This does not mean that true Christians never sin or even sometimes have inconsistencies in their lives. Even the Apostle Paul documented his own sin struggles. It does mean, however, that one should not lightly claim to know Jesus and then disregard obedience to His word in his life. James said that a real faith produces real obedience to Christ in one’s life.
If I know Jesus, I know that He, in His deep love and grace, has died for my sins. Therefore, I want to show my love to Him through joyful obedience to His commands. May God help us to do just that.
