Tim Teebow, Intolerance, Commitment and Truth By Pastor Thomas L. Waters
Recently Tim Teebow was sacrificed on the altar of know better than anyone else - will not tolerate differing beliefs - self righteous press for agreeing to speak at the First Baptist Church of Dallas Texas.
In his sermon Sunday, Robert Jeffress told the congregation,
It’s amazing to me that we’re called anti-gay simply because we say sex ought to be between a man and a women in marriage. Somehow that’s construed to be anti-gay . . . As long as I am the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, we are not going to kneel before the altar of political correctness in convenience. We are going to stand up and boldly proclaim the grace of God and the truth of God without compromise so help me God. That is my commitment.
Pastor Jeffress’ words are reminiscent of words spoken five centuries earlier by another preacher who was under great pressure to change. His character smeared, his belief system assaulted and his books burned he was called to appear before a large group of elites to defend his position.
He was questioned, “Do you wish to defend the books which are recognized as your work? Or to retract anything contained in them?”
He answered,
I cannot provide my writings with any other defense than that which my Lord Jesus Christ provided for His teaching. When He had been interrogated concerning His teaching before Annas and had received a buffet from a servant, He said: "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil." If the Lord Himself, who knew that He could not err, did not refuse to listen to witness against His teaching, even from a worthless slave, how much more ought I, scum that I am, capable of naught but error, to seek and to wait for any who may wish to bear witness against my teaching.
The inquisitor pressed the man, “answer candidly and without horns--do you or do you not repudiate your books and the errors which they contain.”
He responded,
Since then your imperial majesty and your lordships demand a simple answer, I will give you one without teeth and without horns. Unless I am convicted of error by the testimony of Scripture or by manifest evidence . . . I cannot and will not retract, for we must never act contrary to our conscience . . . Here I stand. God help me! Amen!
As the weary defender retreated, a chorus of hisses filled the hall as the Emperor declared he was ready to condemn the man. The man was Martin Luther.
Let me be clear, the Bible is the Word of God. It is not subject to any court of opinion, social mores, or judgment of the court. Laws may be passed, contracts voided and people imprisoned, but the Word of God is not bound. Sin is still sin. Sinners are still lost and in need of the Savior. There is still only one name under heaven by which a person can be saved and that Savior is Jesus Christ the Lord before whom we all must stand and give an account.
