Continuing on in Deuteronomy 17 we see spiritual instructions for the king of Israel, although at this time there was no king! Moses is looking to the day Israel desires an earthly king to rule over them as all the other nations of the earth, and he gives spiritual instructions regarding some things there leader was to do and not do.
He was to guard against where he went, ( i.e. the company he kept) even if for legitimate reasons! The king was never to return or send anyone back to Egypt ( a type of the world). (Deu. 17.16)
He was to guard the love and affections of his heart by refusing to multiply wives, as well as silver and gold. (Deu. 17.18)
He was to read the Word of God for the remainder of his life. (Deu. 17.19)
To LEARN to fear the LORD his God (v19)
To help him keep ALL the law and statutes (v19)
To protect him from pride, and self- exaltation (v20)
To keep him faithful in obedience, (i.e.to keep him from turning aside from God’s ways) (v20)
To prolong his life and kingdom (v20)
To bring blessings upon his children (v2)
