Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 10:26

“As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.” Proverbs 10:26

Yesterday, we looked at this passage from the standpoint of our need to be dependable. Today is Valentine’s Day, where many celebrate the blessing of marriage and love. Today, however, there are many for whom this is a painful day. It is a cruel reminder of broken trust and cruel promises. It is a reminder that people are not as dependable as we would like them to be, and they are certainly not as dependable as they should be. But, God has not left us to the disillusionment and bitterness that comes from the weakness of others. He points us to His Son. “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased!” Look to the One the Father delights in. Jesus is fully dependable! He does not make promises that He does not intend to keep. He is not swayed by emotions or the loss of “that loving feeling” or anything else that makes humans the undependable creatures we are. He came to seek and save the lost, and He did it! He came to do the will of the Father in all things, and He never failed! He came to defeat the powers of darkness, and He crushed Satan’s head. He promised the Holy Spirit as our comforter, and we live by His comfort every day. If you have smoke in your eyes from the failure of others, lift your eyes to heaven where Jesus sits on the throne.
