BEHOLD THE SERVANT
TUNE TO: "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place"
CM/DOUBLE
WORDS BY: Jim Byrd

1. Who has believed Thy Word O Lord,
To whom is it revealed?
For darkness is within our hearts,
And truth from us concealed.
Thine arm O mighty God of grace,
Is strong to seek and save;
Come Spirit and reveal that One,
Whom God the Father gave.

2. Like to a tender plant He grew,
A root out of dry ground;
Behold the Servant of the Lord,
In Him all grace is found.
No comeliness nor form had He,
No beauty could we see;
And yet there dwelt upon this earth,
One of the Godhead three.

3. With all the sin of His own sheep,
Upon the Servant laid;
He suffered at the hands of God
And satisfaction made.
‘Twas so ordained by God Himself,
Before the world began;
To save the people of His choice,
By Christ - the Son of Man.

4. It pleased the Lord to bruise His Son,
For us the Savior died;
His soul the off’ring for our sin,
And we are justified.
Now lifted up upon His throne,
The Lord of everything;
Let sinners saved by sovereign grace,
Sing praises to the King.

CONGREGATIONAL SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 34:1-10

"For I know that the LORD is great,
and that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did He in heaven,
and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places."
(Psalm 135:5-6)

If you wish to be disappointed, look at others;
if you wish to be disheartened, look at yourself;
if you wish to be encouraged, look to Jesus Christ.

INIQUITY LAID UPON THE LAMB
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6). Christ made satisfaction to divine justice for the iniquity of all His people enabling the Lord to a be just God and a Savior. Note five things.

1. The LORD’s people are called sheep. It was for these that the Savior came into the world, lived, died and arose again as their Substitute. "I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

2. The LORD’s sheep acknowledge we went astray in Adam’s transgression, and we are guilty of personal iniquity. Sin alienated us from God, cut us off from access to God, filled us with enmity toward God and must be punished by the wrath of God. Having gone astray, none of the sheep have the desire or ability to come back to the narrow way that leads to life. By nature, there is no difference between those who are the LORD’s sheep and those who are not.

3. The LORD’s sheep have turned, each one individually, to his own way. Some turned to the way of open rebellion and outward wickedness; others to the way of false religion seeking to establish a righteousness of their own through pious deeds. Still others turned to the way of morality and decency believing God would accept them because of their manner of living. No matter the route, however, each was a false way and were it not for the gracious interposition of the Lord, would have ended in death (Proverbs 14:12).

4. The LORD would not let His sheep perish so He did something about our sin. God the Father collected all the iniquities of His sheep and laid them (made them to meet) on our Substitute, the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice that the combined guilt of chosen sinners is singular and is called "the iniquity," (verse 6), "the transgression" (verse 8), and "the sin" (verse 12). All the guilt of the sheep was bound together as though one tremendous burden and transferred, charged or imputed to our Savior. None but God Incarnate could bear such an awful load and not collapse beneath its weight. Like "the fit man" who led the "scapegoat" of Leviticus 16:21-22 "unto a land uninhabited," Christ took our guilt, bore it away and came back from the tomb without the burden. Neither Christ nor the sheep bear the iniquity any more!

5. Having transferred the iniquity of the sheep to His Son Who "was manifested to take away our sins" (1 John 3:5), the Lord will never hold the sheep accountable or responsible for sin. How glorious is the promise of God concerning His people: "their sins and iniquities will I remember no more" (Hebrews 10:17). –Pastor Jim Byrd
