"Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength." Proverbs 8:14

This is a very insightful verse for us to consider. Here, wisdom is speaking to us as if “wisdom” were a person. This is the way the verse would read if we were to replace every pronoun with the word “wisdom”, “Counsel is wisdom’s, and sound wisdom: Wisdom is understanding; wisdom has strength”. There are some important resources we need that are only received through wisdom.

  1. Counsel or advice belongs to wisdom. This means that if we want to be able to give good counsel or good advice, we must have wisdom. What kind of counselor are you? Whether we like it or not, every one of us is a counselor. We dispense advice to other people every single day. The question you need to consider is not whether or not you will be a counselor, but whether you are a good counselor or a bad one. A good rule of thumb for you to remember is that your counsel or advice is only as good as it is biblical.
  2. Wisdom is understanding. If you have a desire to have an accurate understanding of yourself and the world in which you live, you need wisdom. Why do you do the things you do? Why do others react in ways that seem so absurd? Why is it that when you give a person power and authority, it is almost a given that they will abuse it for their own personal gain? If you want to have an accurate understanding of the world and its circumstances, you need wisdom. Once again, your understanding is only as good as it is biblical.
  3. Wisdom has strength. Do you ever wish that you weren’t such a man pleaser? Have you ever struggled with trying to be strong but not finding the strength? Wisdom provides that strength. First of all wisdom reveals truth. Truth is the foundation for strong convictions. Your strength will be tested in your ability to stand for what you think is right far more often than in any other way. Wisdom will give you a backbone of steel when it comes to standing for your convictions. And once again, your convictions are only as good as they are biblical.

Let’s commit to getting into God’s word and growing in wisdom so that we are:

  • Giving others good (biblical) counsel
  • Growing in our understanding of God and the world
  • Strengthening ourselves to stand strong in our biblical convictions
