What a staggering thought we find in Luke 2:44. “But they supposing him to have been in the company went a day’s journey.” In our world of religion, there are so many that make each day’s journey, supposing Him to be in their company. Truly, my friend, we can’t take for granted the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. No doubt, Mary and Joseph had reason to believe Jesus was with them. Were they not of the same family? Had they not traveled together to Jerusalem? Yet they assumed too much. Simply because an act or ritual is carried on in the church or name of Christ, does not mean He is in it. Matthew tells of many who thought their actions would be accepted as they were done in the name of Christ, (Matthew 11:22-23). But much is done in the name of Christ that is truly of the flesh and sinful.
We have assembled today in this place to worship God. Let us pray to Him to bless us with His presence. We will have met in vain, if the Lord of Glory does not honor us with His Presence to give worth and merit to our worship.
Sinner, it is faith, not presumption that lays hold on Christ. Do not assume you may have Him at your beck and call. “It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.” Do not continue to go on blind in your own blindness, but rather seek to know Christ and to be found in Him. Christian, do not assume the presence of Christ in your daily walk, call upon Him early, seek Him out afresh and anew each day. Stand still and wait upon Him. Keep your eyes upon Him. Keep your eyes upon Him and you will never have to suppose Him to be in your company.
