Former cricket star Imran Khan was arrested yesterday as Pakistani police blocked a protest rally over the Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
Members of Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf or Movement for Justice party were among scores of people held in Lahore. Khan, ex-husband of socialite Jemima Khan, was later freed without charge.
Pakistan banned public demonstrations over the cartoons two weeks ago after rallies turned to violence. Last weekend there were clashes between protesters and police in Islamabad as hundreds defied the ban.
Yesterday the authorities deployed 15,000 policemen and 3000 paramilitary troops in Lahore. They patrolled streets and stood guard outside government installations, mosques and foreign consulates.
