The Gospel is no mere invitation, but a proclamation, a proclamation concerning Christ, which is true whether men believe it or not. No man is asked to believe that Christ died for him in particular. The Gospel, put in brief terms, is this: Christ died for sinners; you are a sinner; believe in Christ, and you shall be saved. In the Gospel, God simply announces the terms upon which men may be saved, namely repentance and faith; all men are commanded indiscriminately to fulfill the terms.

Oh, may God help us to maintain the balance of truth! There is something more in this Book, brothers and sisters, beside election, particular redemption, and the new birth. There are there, and I would not say one word to weaken or repudiate them, but that is not all that is in this Book. There is also the human side—there is man’s responsibility, and the sinner’s responsibility of repentance and believing in Christ. There is also the pressing of the gospel upon the unsaved. I want to tell you frankly that if a church does not evangelize, it will fossilize, and if I am not mistaken, that is God’s method of perpetuating His work and of maintaining His churches. God uses means and the means that the Holy Spirit uses in His work is the preaching of the gospel to the unconverted—to every creature.

You say that it is unjust of God to choose one person and to pass by another. But the fact is, that it is not unjust, because God never yet refused salvation to any man who really asked Him for salvation and asked from his heart. God never yet turned away one single sinner that sought him in true repentance. Oh, if there is a sinner here tonight, prove it for yourself. If there is a sinner here tonight, test it out for yourself. Christ has said, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ If you will come to Him, there is rest for you! Try Him right now and see! Put Him to the proof right now. No sinner will come to Him unless he is drawn by God to come. Yet it is the sinner’s responsibility to come and he will be damned if he does not come. The sinner will be damned, not because God created him for that purpose; he will be damned because of his own sins. He will receive the just reward of his iniquities, but nevertheless, it is the responsibility of the sinner to come, and if he will come, there is salvation for him.
