A Brief Exposition of 1 Corinthians, (The Church’s Problem With Charity)

Beloved,

As is the case with his letter to the Church in Rome, Paul concludes his first letter to the Corinthian believers on a note of service. The ancient world was no different than modern times in that though the Church is by its very essence not of this world, it still exists in a very real and tangible realm. That is, there a certain material necessities that must be met during the course of very real world ministry. Paul’s conclusion serves to highlight not only this reality but the theological reality that is in need of demonstration. Charity to other believers is perhaps the greatest expression of submission to the revealed word of God. In light of the main theme of Paul’s writing to the Church at Corinth to not go beyond what is written, to not meet the mandates of what is written is an error that must be corrected also. It seems that the need and the process by which the Corinthian believers could undertake such charity was completely unknown. Paul’s admonitions are in fact practical, that is for one to bring his offering at the beginning of the week, but also truly indicative of what a changed nature looks like. It is entirely likely that the Corinthian believers enjoyed excess above that of their other Asia-minor counterparts; that is, the finances did not seem to be the issue. Rather, the willingness to set one’s own welfare and desires aside for the sake of those suffering poverty and want, or if nothing else, to provide for the further work of the kingdom ministry was at issue. Paul’s answer; undertake a lifestyle of displaying charity as a natural extension of who one is. This does not seem to be just restricted to the collection for the saints in Jerusalem but for all those who may be in need; even those in Corinth. In this way Christ is honored and one’s true nature is readily seen by submission to the mandates of the Lord Himself to those who love Him.
