A Brief Exposition of 1 Corinthians, (Problems With The Gospel) Part 1

Beloved,

It seems odd to assert that the Church may have a problem with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ but Paul’s next discourse deals precisely with this issue. It seems that alternate forms of the Gospel of Christ or at least significant variations to the Gospel message had been introduced into the Church at Corinth. Paul says in chapter fifteen, verse one, “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.” By this statement it seems that the Gospel in its original and pure form was under attack by those that would seek to alter its message. Paul initiates this discussion by clearly recounting what the Gospel certainly is and what it means for those who trust in its message.
As a matter of first importance, Paul addresses the issue of Christ’s being raised from the dead. This notion was not uncommon in the ancient world but was viewed by the pagan nations materially different than the Judeo-Christian understanding in that the prospect of resurrection was seen as scandalously foolish. Whether those whom Paul spoke affirmed or denied the actual resurrection of the dead does not seem to be of as great an issue as the necessity of Christ being raised from the dead. Paul correctly indicates that by necessity Christ must have been raised form the dead otherwise the entirety of Christian faith is without meaning. The resurrection of Christ proves not only His deity and rightful authority to stand in on behalf of wanton sinners before a holy God, but that His atoning sacrifice was in fact acceptable to the Father resulting in the mitigation of divine wrath upon the sinner. Without these proofs displayed within the resurrection of Christ, Christian faith is completely without hope.
