Baptism’s Personal Significance
FROM THE PASTOR Baptism’s Personal Significance
No matter what persuasion you have on the question of infant versus believer’s baptism (or “paedo-baptism” v. “credo-baptism”), you will admit that your baptism should be something that you take seriously, something that ought to be of great personal significance to you. The timing of your Baptism should not be as significant to you as the fact that it is an institution of GOD. It is not your sign but God’s. It is His instituted ordinance. He says, “This is My you are showing something to God or others; but that God is showing something to you . That is what is of primary significance. Definitely, God calls us to respond in faith, repentance and obedience, but God is the initiator of the Covenant and of the sign. He is the “Sovereign” – the royal covenant Maker. How thankful we may be that this is a Covenant of sovereign grace!
Where would we be if God did not initiate the Covenant, apply the Covenant to our hearts, and keep us under the care of His Covenant? It is His Covenant of Grace. What a privilege that His promise of grace is extended to us personally, and is also directed toward our children! What a blessing that God shows His personal interest in our little ones even before they realize it! What a joy when they begin to realize the personal significance of their Baptism! Young members: you have a sign from God that He takes a personal interest in you. Have you thought about that? What does your Baptism mean to you
