"Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd and against the man that is My fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the Shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn Mine hand upon the little ones." Zechariah 13:7
"Is it nothing to you, all you that pass by? Behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto My sorrow, which is done to Me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted Me in the day of His fierce anger" Lamentations 1:12
"Yet it pleases the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His soul a sacrifice for sin." Isaiah 53:10
The character attributes of God were magnified like never before or since when Christ was "made to be sin" and God the Father poured His holy wrath out on His Son. This display for those few hours on the cross shows us that sin will not be tolerated by God. He is of "too pure eyes to behold evil" and let it go unpunished. His purity and perfection is such that He is always consistent and faithful to Himself in all that He does in His will and the carrying out of His purpose.
The purpose of God in the accomplished death of the LORD Jesus Christ was to glorify Himself in the salvation of sinners as He magnified the law by the fulfillment and complete satisfaction of it. This separates God from all idols, in that He is both a just God and a Saviour, the Just and the Justifier. God, by His wisdom, was able to justify ungodly sinners and remain holy and righteous in doing so.
The only way God could accomplish salvation and remain holy, just, and righteous was by placing the perfect sinless Substitute, Christ, in the hands of an angry God when the sin of God's people was imputed to Him. The result was that Christ actually put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. He reconciled the elect to the Father by bringing in an everlasting righteousness for His people. "For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (II Cor 5:21).
What love the Son has for the Father in agreeing to take on the punishment for sin that pleased the Father so much! What love the Father has for the Son! We who are believers benefit from all this in being accepted and loved in Christ, who showed His love by His action. Thanks be to God for His willingness to save by grace alone!
