A friend in America has kindly sourced me 50+ newspaper outlets in America that made mention of our protest against Civil Partnerships.

Sir Elton John Ties the Knot

Britain's most famous gay couple - Sir Elton John and Canadian filmmaker David Furnish - tied the knot Wednesday in a much-anticipated ceremony capping off the first week of legalized civil unions in the United Kingdom.

As with all celebrity weddings, fans strained to see what the bride would be wearing. And when the Rolls Royce pulled up, it was a surprise - the often flamboyant couple was wearing traditional morning coats - no ruffles, no wigs.

It was the first sign that this was to be a serious, symbolic, and intimate ceremony. Only their families and close friends attended.

Earlier this year Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles at the same place. Guildhall has now become the site of two controversial weddings this year.

Onlooker Jil Funnell told ABCNews, "I think it's very good probably for the gay community that he has done this and he is one of the first to do it. It's like he's giving his blessing and it's just great for him."

But although Elton John and his long-term partner David Furnish are the new poster couple for gay marriage, their celebrity is not swaying staunch opponents of same-sex unions.

Protest Organizer Reverend Ian Brown says, â€œIt's a sad thing, a sad day for our country. It was a tragedy for Sodom when Sodom went the way that it did and it inevitably led to the judgement of God.â€

There was a distinct lack of this opinion represented outside Guildhall. The happy couple emerged to cheers and well-wishes, and even a homemade cake.

The big day was a long-time coming for Elton and for gay couples throughout the United Kingdom.

There are 687 same-sex weddings happening across the country today. As for Elton John's celebration, 700 guests are planning to attend what is sure to be one of his most lavish parties.
