The wanton taking of a life under the guise of a “woman’s right to choose” has been and is being peacefully but consistently opposed by some Christians in Canada (as well as in the USA). It is an issue that continues to profoundly impact both our own culture and that of our neighbor to the north. Since Roe v. Wade in our own nation we have, through the deaths of over 1 million children a year, developed a culture of death. The sanctity of life has been cheapened and we are seeing more and more indiscriminant murders because of it. The most recent example is the wholesale slaying of seven people at a California private university. I believe these kinds of random death sentences are only going to escalate. I also believe there is a link between state sponsored permission to put to death unwanted children with no rationale for such action being required either by the mother or her attending physician and the slaughter of other innocent human beings simply because some individual decides to indiscriminately wield a weapon of death and mayhem (like a handgun, rifle, bomb or other such device).
Take away the right to life of the unborn (a right only God legitimately has) and you have also severely dented the legal basis for men, women and children to live freely without fear of an unnatural loss of life. In the Declaration of Independence, our founding fathers affirmed that human beings have an unalienable right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This was a human right understood to be granted by God and not by any government. However, since 1973 this loss of one’s “right to life” has been limited to pre-birthed children, but that is changing within a culture and nation that sanctions the death of the innocent.
To demonstrate how ingrained and sacrosanct this cultural icon of abortion has become, take a look at the tirade recently leveled by a Canadian judge against a pro-life individual who refused to knuckle under and promised to continue her non-violent attempts to educate women regarding alternatives to ending their child’s life at an abortion clinic. I would venture to guess that this kind of attitude has already been expressed in U.S. courts by judges who overstep their God-given role to uphold justice and just laws. This Canadian jurist just happened to openly express his contempt for anyone seeking to protect the life of a child in the womb. God’s people must not cower in the face of such attacks, but boldly speak for those who have no voice.
