Faith Is A Gift From God - Ephesians 2: 8

Beloved,

Faith as God’s divine gift can be seen in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Church, chapter two, verse eight and nine. Here, the apostle says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” To correctly understand the thrust of the apostle’s teaching, a little bit of syntax is in order. The basic intent of this passage is the means by which one is saved. Syntactically, the clause “you are saved” stands at the head of all the other dependant clauses in the balance of verses eight and nine which modify this independent clause and give additional information as to how and why one is saved. Under this structural analysis, the head clause, “you are saved” includes an interesting verbal form σεσῳσμένοι (perfect passive participial form of σώζω). Semantically, the perfected aspect indicates that one’s salvation is not the result of happen stance or fate. Rather salvation is an intentioned and purposed occurrence. The passive nature of the word saved indicates that the subject of the verb (in this case “you”) does not complete the action but has the action accomplished for or one behalf of the subject. Lastly, the participial nature of this word once again indicates the ontological essence or nature; hence the subject has by nature become a “saved one.” This is not simply a statement of one’s position but rather a declaration of one’s condition; he is truly saved as the result of a entirely new nature that
was previously unknown to that person. Summarizing all three components, the saved person is so because of the intentional activity of someone or something outside themselves and the result of the act of salvation produces a materially new ontological nature in that person.
