“Deliver Us From Evil” As we move through the years and the decades we get the impression that evil is becoming more and more pervasive in western society and even in the world. We hear more and more of wars, rebellion, riots, murders, perversion, broken family life. If there is an actual increase in the expression of evil, of man’s hatred against God and his neighbour then surely we could conclude that we are closing in on the “last days.” (II Tim.3). It appears that the sins of our time have provoked the lifting from man’s conscience of the restraining effect of God’s general revelation and common grace. (cf. Rom.1 & 2). Lest we should be caught up in the tide of carnal allurements of sin, Christians do well to pray with even more zeal, “Lead us not into temptation. – Lord, do not abandon us to the sinful desires of our own depraved hearts. But deliver us from the Evil One.”
