Signs we'd like to see in the church

Signs that we might see posted at the invisible church's bulletin board, if we looked really hard...

"Open during construction." While He builds His Kingdom, He is not too busy to hear a cry of pain. While He whittles away at your rough edges, He listens to the sighs from deep inside. The one who forms character still answers distress calls. Do not fear that Heaven is so strict as to forget who you are. He knows our "frame", our nature. While the dust is flying in His fantastic building program, He remembers we too are but dust. Heaven is open. Even during construction.

"Lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks: Work." A little mean-spirited I guess. Not sure Heaven would say it quite like this. But it does grieve me to see God's people investing so much money and time in pills, machines and health clubs, not to mention diets and drinks and even operations to get rid of that ugly fat, when the remedy for all is clearly stated. Get those hands dirty and work. Exercise self-control at the table. Learn to walk the crucified life. Jesus was not fat. We do not have to be either! If a man doesn’t work, he should not eat. And he's not going to look too good either.

"Single prayer health care." You've heard of single payer health care these days. I think the single prayer kind could be more effective, if God's people could be taught to believe that God has not changed. When Jesus came on the scene He encountered a group not terribly unlike what we see in so many churches today. They are totally OK with the status quo, and the status quo stopped expecting miracles centuries ago. Like the Pharisees, we have even codified and theologized our unbelief. The story goes that miracles were needed "back in Jesus' day" because Jesus had to be proved to be the Messiah, because the Bible had not been written, because, because, because. But Jesus, it says in my edition of the Bible, had compassion on the multitudes. That's why he healed a little girl, and raised His best friend, and crashed every funeral He ever attended. He really loved us. And in loving us, He showed us Who the Father is, and how much The Father loved us. That means it's not a stretch that a "single prayer", a single believing prayer, a single expectant prayer, a single compassionate prayer, could work in the twenty-first, as well as the first, century. Ever had a prayer answered after only one "try"? Proves that you don't have to beg God for something He really wants to give you anyway!
