“I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for He will speak peace unto His people, and to His saints: but let them not turn again to folly.” Psalm 85:8 What good news! The holy, sovereign, righteous God will speak to His people. He could speak of our sins and condemn us. He could destroy us with the words of His mouth. But, no, through the person of Jesus Christ, God speaks peace to His people. Because of Christ’s work in taking away our sins and giving us His perfect righteousness, God is at peace with his people.
In the context of this psalm, God had not long before restored His people from captivity. He had forgiven them of their sins that led them to captivity. But, along with this word of peace comes a sobering exhortation: “but let them not turn again to folly.”
In other words, “Don’t go back to the sins that led you away to bondage!” Rejoice in God’s peace to you, but run as far away as you can from the folly of the sins He has saved you from. As you turn your back on folly, turn straight towards Christ and run hard after Him.
