A Thought From the Word

Then the same day at the evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors where shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.”

John 20:19

“Peace be unto you” was a common greeting among Jews of that day. But, be assured, Jesus wasn’t giving some empty, meaningless greeting to His disciples. He meant exactly what He said. Peace was exactly what their troubled, fearful spirits needed at that time.

Their Master had been crucified, the enemy looked stronger than ever, and who knew what the future would hold for these disciples. Would they be detained and put to death like the One they followed? What did their spiritual future hold? They had hoped for a kingdom from Jesus. Peace was what they needed, and it could only come from Jesus.

Jesus’ appearance to them showed that He was indeed risen from the grave and victorious over death. It meant that the enemy hadn’t won after all. The disciples could have peace because the Risen and Reigning Christ would empower them to endure valiantly in the face of their enemies. It meant that their future wasn’t uncertain; Christ’s resurrection ensured their final resurrection. Yes, there was much reason to have peace.

Is your spirit troubled today? Do fears of the future plague you? Meditate about Jesus. Think about His powerful resurrection; ponder His tender word of “peace” to these disciples and petition Him to give you the same. Jesus knew the fear and turmoil that swirled in the hearts of the disciples that day…and He cared! Believer, He cares about your trouble too.
