“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple. ” Psalm 27:4 Two key words here: desire and seek. David’s desire for God led Him to seek God. Specifically here, David’s desire involved dwelling in God’s house for the purpose of gazing on God’s beauty and learning His will.
God’s beauty is not a beautiful church building or an expensive stained-glass window. The beauty of His holiness, power, grace and love is beheld in His revealing Himself through His gospel. God’s beauty is also (though imperfectly) seen in His people as they reflect Him in their lives. David also wanted to “inquire” of God. That is, He wanted to learn more of the will of God for His life, so that he could build His life on a solid foundation.
Desire . Do our desires reflect those of David’s? If it is only one desire among many equally strong ones, it won’t do much for us. It must be the chief desire of our lives.
Seek. This requires great effort, commitment and sacrifice. Many express a desire for the above, but don’t follow through with the necessary seeking. May the Lord grant us all the grace to have right desires, followed by the essential effort.
We will never regret, nor will be the losers, for desiring and seeking the beauty and wisdom of God!
