INVICTUS Versus CONQUERED

The poem Invictus is arguably the best-remembered work of William Ernest Henley (1849-1903). The poem’s title comes from the Latin word meaning “unconquered”. It is said Henley wrote the poem in 1875 to express his defiance and resilience following the amputation of his foot due to infection. In the poem Henley demonstrates his spiritual skepticism, admitting the possibility of gods but lacking any faith in them, confessing that his life was full of darkness with its wrath and tears, and declaring that horror awaited him beyond this life. And as the final expression of his defiance against “whatever gods may be”, and of his refusal to trust in any of them, he declares the words for which the poem is most recognizable and best remembered: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

This is one of the boldest boasts of human freewillism and denial of divine sovereignty you will ever hear.

Invictus has been quoted by many men, including national and political leaders, to express their defiance in the face of trying circumstances. It was quoted also by the American terrorist Timothy McVeigh in a handwritten communiqué released shortly before his execution in 2001 for murder committed in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Dorothea Day responded about 1900 to Henley’s Invictus with a poem titled Conquered (also known as My Captain). (Very little else is known about Dorothea Day.) We here place both poems side-by-side so one may compare how unbelievers and Christians differ in their reactions to unpleasant circumstances in their lives.
