Living and Dying in Egypt

Genesis 46-47

When God spoke to Jacob at Beersheba, he spoke to him of a death and a resurrection; of a going down and a bringing up. When Jacob left Beersheba he was dead but alive. He was dead except for Josephs’ corn. The same famine had fallen on him as it had on the others. He was dead to Egypt having no friend to help him or take care of him except Joseph. He was dead in his spiritual sojourn with God telling him plainly that he would die in Egypt. Jacob had nothing in Egypt but Joseph; but in Joseph he found all his heart could desire.

The old patriarch came into Egypt a stranger but Joseph took him by the hand and led him into the presence and favor of the sovereign of the land.

Jacob owned no land in Egypt but at Josephs request Pharaoh said to him, “The Land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell” (Genesis 47: 6)

Jacob had no food in Egypt but, “Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his fathers’ household, with bread, according to their families.” (Genesis 47: 12)

Jacob had no Canaan in Egypt, but he had the promise of God and the oath of his son that his final place of abode would be in Canaan.

In Colossians 3: 1-4 it says, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God, when Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

Jacob never lived so alive, so happy, so joyful, or as contented as he did his last seventeen years in Goshen. Did the Egyptians despise him? Probably. Were they jealous of him? Most likely. But they couldn’t do anything about it because Joseph ruled over all. Beloved, you and I will never live so carefree and content until we see ourselves dead but alive in Christ. Egypt was nothing but a cemetery to Jacob but Joseph was enough to make it heaven. When faith puts on the new man he dies to all but him. “There is no more Greek or Jew, circumcision or uncircumcision,, Seythian bond nor free: But Christ is all and in all.” (Colossians 3:11)
