Jehovah’s Tent

When God desired to be among His people, did He descend in a majestic display of unviewable glory? Does He pave Himself a road across the wilderness and construct Himself a massive edifice by which to distinguish Himself from His people? No. He comes to live among the Hebrews and as their name suggests, they lived in tents; so for His own house, He sets up – a tent. The phrase “Tabernacle of the Lord” may just as well be translated, “Jehovah’s Tent.” And thus He dwelt with them for generations until He had established them in their own land. Only after Israel was fully established in their own walled cities and fixed dwellings; only after the king had his own palace did God allow for His own solid dwelling – the Temple of the Lord. The last person in Israel to rest was the Lord Himself. He did not rest until His people had rest.

Many years later, God came among His people again. Does He appear in a glorious form, descending from the heavens in a fiery chariot? Does He move about the nation as a nebulous spirit-light? Do angels go before Him to sweep away the tiniest obstacle to His path? No, he comes to dwell with those who live in mortal bodies, so the God of all life appears in natural, mortal flesh. John wrote, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14) The word translated “dwelt” is the same word used throughout the book of Hebrews to describe the “Tabernacle” of the Lord. God became indistinguishable from us, so far as the eye of flesh could detect. In every respect He became like us. And in this condition He did not rest until He had achieved rest for all His chosen ones. After He had settled them in their rest by accomplishing all that the Father had given Him to do, He entered His rest - His eternal, human, solid Temple - a glorified body living in a glorified place. And, in time, we shall be with Him and like Him
