GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH of DANVILLE

“Don’t tell me that a man preaches the Gospel if the most conspicuous figure in his sermon is not Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Septimus Sears (1817-1877)

Our Triumphant Savior — Don Fortner
(Tune: #342 — Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone? — CM)

1. Saints, see your Savior, conqu’ring Lord,
With His triumphant train,
Clad in His vesture, dipped in blood,
That flowed when He was slain.

2. Exalted high upon His throne,
His blood-stained vesture shows;
He gave His life, your sins atoned,
And conquered all your foes!

3. Decked in His robe of crimson hue,
And crowned with many crowns,
He stands and intercedes for you,
And makes your cause His own.

4. The blood that stained His garment thus,
Washed all your sins away;
Obtained eternal life for us; —
There’s nothing left to pay!

5. His vesture marks the conquest won,
And vict’ries yet prepared;
In heaven with our Savior one,
His glory we shall share!

BELIEVER’S BAPTISM (immersion) is the symbolic picture of fulfilment of all righteousness and the accomplishment of our redemption by Christ. If God the Holy Spirit has given you faith in Christ and you wish to publicly confess your faith in Him in believer’s baptism, please see Pastor Fortner after any of our worship services.

Why did Paul cast the demon out of her?
Acts 16:18

As Paul and his friends continued their ministry in Philippi, they encountered a young slave girl. She was possessed by a demon, who gave her certain magical powers.
She was particularly well known for her ability to foretell the future. So much so, that the men who owned her made a handsome profit from the fees they charged for her services.

Luke tells us Paul was greatly agitated by this young girl, and, after putting up with her for “many days,” he finally cast the demon out of her.
That appears a very strange episode to many. Why would Paul cast out a demon that was speaking the truth?

The answer is the demon was seeking to discredit Paul’s message by causing people to associate it with the occult. Satan was trying to hijack the message of Paul. In other words, the demon wanted the people of Philippi to think the Gospel was just another way of securing what this young girl had been offering — magical powers for coping with life. — Roger Ellsworth

Believer’s Baptism
Pastor Robert E. McNeill

The most enlightening words I ever read on baptism were written by J. N. Frost. “Pouring or sprinkling,” he said, “tells what is done with water. Baptism or immersion tells what is done with the person. You may sprinkle water, you may pour water, but you do not baptize water! You baptize or immerse the person. When our Lord commanded us to make disciples and baptize or immerse them, He did not say to sprinkle water on them; He said for us to baptize them. When sinners receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they die to the dominion of sin. This is the truth signified in believer’s baptism by immersion. By going down into the waters of baptism, they testify that, through their grace-and-faith union with Christ, they have been buried with Him in death. Having died to sin, they are no longer under its condemnation or bondage. Rising from the waters of baptism, they proclaim that they have been raised in Christ to newness of life that gives them spiritual victory. Paul explained this when he wrote Romans 6:3-5: “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection.” The Bible puts the blood of Christ before the water of baptism and teaches, not that baptism is essential to salvation, but that salvation is essential to baptism. Some denominations teach that one must go through the waters of baptism to receive salvation by the shed blood of Christ. But the Bible teaches that one must go through the blood to the waters of baptism.

Redemption Obtained by Christ

“Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” (Hebrews 9:12)

The only hope for fallen, guilty, depraved sinners is redemption, a redemption which includes atonement for sin, satisfaction for justice, and effectual deliverance from the guilt, power, dominion, and consequences of sin. Such redemption could be accomplished by only one Person, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior. Not only could he alone do it, He has done it; and He has done it alone. The Holy Spirit declares in Hebrews 10:1 — “The law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”

According to those words of inspiration, the law contained in the Old Testament Scriptures had a shadow of good things to come. That is to say, God in the Old Testament, under the types and shadows of the law, gave many pictures and prophecies of what He would do for and give to His people through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The sacrifices offered to God in the Old Testament could never take away one sin. However, the law did have many instructive pictures, types, and shadows of our redemption by the blood of Christ. In each of those types, pictures, and prophecies setting forth the redemptive work of Christ several things are obvious. Here are three very obvious facts revealed in the Word of God about our redemption by Christ. These three revealed facts teach us much about the redemption Christ has obtained for His elect.

The redemption portrayed and promised in the Old Testament was revealed only to a chosen people. Only the nation of Israel had the passover sacrifice and the promise of a redeemer, because only the Israel of God, God’s elect, are the people for whom Christ the true Passover was sacrificed.

The redemption sacrifice was made, offered to God, and accepted by God for a specifically chosen people, named by God himself. Even so, our Lord Jesus Christ died for those people given to Him by the Father in the covenant of grace before the world began. He said, “I lay down my life for the sheep.” The good Shepherd died for His sheep, not for the goats of the world.

The redemption portrayed the effectual deliverance of all those for whom it was accomplished. Every soul for whom the passover lamb was slain walked out of Egypt by the power of God. Even so, every sinner for whom the Son of God made atonement by His substitutionary death at Calvary shall be delivered from the curse of God’s holy law and saved from sin, death, and hell by the merit and power of His precious blood. Not one of those for whom Christ died under the wrath of God shall perish in hell. They all must and shall be saved.
