We are afraid, worried or anxious because we do not believe God is our loving father, or because He is not our functional god. Let’s review Jesus teaching on money to this point:
If you rightly fear God, you will never fear anything else. If the accumulation or enjoyment of wealth is your life, then you will die a fool. This week we get to point 3: Looking to wealth or to your own ability to do what only God can do leads to anxiety.
We worry because we trust weak sources of life and honor that we instinctively know will fail. Specifically we trust wealth to protect our life and honor, and we know that it cannot deliver. The only antidote to trusting wealth is to give it away.
We need a steady source of life: security, existence, thriving and enjoying our being. We also need a certain measure of glory, value, beauty, esteem or status. Where will you go to find them? To deny these needs denies your humanity.
So where will you go? You can go to something below you, something you can control. But those things will fail when you fail. Or you can look to your father in heaven.
