Here in this text we have the history of this man Simon the sorcerer that heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, and was baptized by Philip. All seemed to be well and there was joy in the city, but when Peter came and conveyed the gifts of the Spirit to those that believed, this man Simon manifested to all by his fruits that he was not a true believer. He showed to all that his heart was set on the money and power of this world when he tried to buy the office of an Apostle. (v.15-19) When Peter heard this he said "Thy money perish with thee…thy heart is not right in the sight of God." (v.20-24) The answer of this man is like many who have felt the guilt of their sins, but will not come to Christ for forgiveness. His response was "pray for me…" as though Peter's prayer could intercede for his soul. This man recognized his guilt and need of prayer and forgiveness, but like many of our day he went to the wrong person.

Many people will feel the conviction of their sin and even feel the need of a savior, but that as far as they will go. They believe that the wounds and scars of their guilt will assure them of their acceptance with God. They think that if they have the feeling of their lost estate that it must be of the Holy Ghost. This is not true. When the Holy Spirit comes in power a man will feel the guilt of his sin. He will own that in his "flesh dwelleth no good thing." He will confess that he cannot merit God's favor by his will, his works, or his religion. But if he stops there it is nothing more than guilt of conscience. All that are made sinners by the Holy Spirit will not stop till they come to Jesus Christ. They will not be consoled by their loss, but only by what Jesus Christ has restored to them by His blood. (Ps.69:4)
