Our Motivation To Good Works
The flesh of the believer must be restrained. The flesh of a believer is as corrupt as that of an unbeliever, and because the honor of the Lord in this world is at stake, the believer must "deny all ungodliness and worldly lusts". But how is this to be accomplished? According to the teaching of many, we must multiply rules. As though the Ten Commandments were not burdensome enough, there are added to them hundreds of lesser commands concerning nearly every aspect of human experience! But God has given His people but one rule, one command, the fulfillment of which identifies all His disciples: Love. While we despise the sort of restraint practiced by legalists, let us not cast off all restraint. Yea more, let us not be simply restrained from evil, but constrained to good by the love of Christ.
