Resisting the Things of God

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him: Neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (I Corinthians 2: 14)

This bold declaration of the apostle begins with the word, “But.” For every declaration of truth the natural man has a “but.”

Here, the apostle Paul is dealing with the Spirit of the Living God in the revelation of Christ in gospel preaching. But the natural man will not receive it. It is his “will not” that is stated here as his “cannot.” He “cannot” know these things because they are spiritually understood.

The Spirit of God saves men and women through the preaching of the gospel. You cannot bow to God and reject his ways and means. It is not altogether in one thing but “the things of the Spirit of God.”

The same man who denies the preaching of the gospel as the necessary means of salvation is the man who absents himself from worship and refuses to study such subjects as his pastor is teaching. If the pastor is in Romans he is in Luke and if the Sunday School lesson is in John he is in Jeremiah.

He is also a man who cannot be pastored. He pastors himself as the Jews did with dead prophets who could neither define or defend their ministry. The Spirit of God attends the Fathers’ means and men.

So be careful that in resisting them you don’t end up resisting Him! (Acts 7: 51)
