Emptied Out and Swallowed Up

Genesis 32: 22-28

On the bank of the river Jabbok, fearing what lay ahead, a man came and wrestled with Jacob until the breaking of the day. Jabbok means to empty out, to utterly make void, and to pour out and be swallowed up. In Genesis 32: 23 he calls Jabbok, a brook. When a small and insignificant stream empties into a large body of water it totally becomes void. It looses its power, direction, end, and name and becomes one with the bigger stream. What a fitting place for Gods’ elect to be swallowed up of God.

God came to Jacob, as He comes to all His own, in the person of His son. As He comes, by the preaching of the gospel and the power of Gods’ spirit, He lays hold on us and the wrestling begins. It is not a boxing match, where one knocks the other senseless, but a wrestling to force the will of one upon the other. It was a wrestling over the will of God, the power of God, and the purpose of God. Jacob wrestled over eternal things. In this wrestling he was both emptied out and swallowed up. Emptied out of his own ideas and concepts, emptied out of self righteousness, and emptied out of personal pride and ambition. He was swallowed up of God. Like the Jabbok emptying out into the river Jordan, Jacob found himself becoming one with Christ. Before long it was not the man wrestling with him but himself wrestling with the man. Jacob did not wrestle to bring him down but to hold him near.

Let me go for the day breaketh, said the Lord, but Jacob cried in desperation; I will not let you go, except you bless me! (Genesis 32: 26) As with the river Jabbok so with Jacob; he lost his name and took upon him the name of the greater body. As with the river so with Jacob; he had power with God. As with the river so with the man; Jacob found a new direction, new strength, and a new nature. May God be pleased to send this man to wrestle with us and give us hearts to wrestle with him.
