Uncovering His Fathers’ Wells

Genesis 26: 18-33

As a sojourner in a strange land and being led of God, Isaac discovers four wells. These wells, of precious water, were wells dug by his father Abraham the man of Faith and covered up by his enemies. It is ever the way of the heathen to cover up the truth and ever the way of grace to discover it anew. As Isaac is a type of all the children of promise, I see in his unearthing some things of benefit. The Old Testament is full of spiritual wells but the enemy has covered them up so that we must be led of God to discover the hidden treasure.

The first well is called Esek. Its name means glistering; a one of a kind beauty. Like the inner beauty of a painting that only a few can see. The first thing faith discovers is the glory of God in the face of Christ. This glory sets him apart from all others.

The second well is called Sitnah. This means gusher or deluge. It is irresistible water, unstoppable water, and living water springing up within.

The next is Rehoboth. It means to enlarge or to make room. “In my Fathers’ house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place (to make room) for you.”

And the last well is called Shebah. It is the well of the oath of seven; sealed by the giving of seven eve lambs. This covenant oath is an end to all strife. All of the wells are yours because the covenant is honored and established to you as it was to your fathers.
