Most of you have seen or at least heard of Pastor Jones and his 35-40 member congregation in Gainesville, FL. First, let me put all rumors to rest – I never met the man and had no idea that he or his church even existed and I assume that most of the city didn’t know of him either. His plan to burn 150 Korans is ill advised to say the least. I’m sure many have been talking about this around the water cooler and/or coffee pot at work, maybe among neighbors and other acquaintances. How should we respond to all of this? What should we tell our children that are old enough to understand what is going on and the potential damage it could do around the world?
Chuck Colson of Prison Fellowship has written an excellent, biblical and thoughtful response to Pastor Jones’ foolishness that I want you to be aware of so that you might have a helpful response as the Saturday book burning looms ever closer. You can find this Breakpoint article at http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/15259. You can even print or download it if you wish. I think you’ll find that it is well written and on target.
Grace and Peace,
Gary
PS – Of course, if the media never gave this guy the time of day and covered nothing of his intentions then no one would know anything about his plan to burn the Koran and Saturday would come and go without a problem but that would likely be too much to ask in a world where sensationalism reigns supreme and viewership is the only thing that matters (with all due respect to those responsible, conscientious TV and print journalists who are, sadly, in the minority within their profession).
