Should we feel miserable about our sin? From where do we know about our sin and misery? We know about our sin and misery from the Law of God, because Paul says “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God (Rom 3:10 – 11).”’ Notice what Paul says here. Paul says, “As it is written: There are a few who are righteous, maybe six or seven. Is this what Paul said? No, Paul said "There is no one righteous, not even one." How does this make you feel? Does this make you want to go out and brag about it to someone? Well, I hope it makes you feel miserable, because Scripture tells us that sin angers God our Father. Although I will rarely admit it, even my earthly father’s anger and disappointment toward me causes me to feel miserable. Therefore, the anger or God toward sinful humanity – us, should hopefully make us feel even worst. Paul goes on to say about our accountability to God under the Law that “. . . no one will be declared righteous in [the sight of God] by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” Scripture tells that sin separates us from God and incurs God’s wrath; therefore, we should feel miserable about our sin.
