GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH of DANVILLE
September 5, 2010

When a preacher compromises his doctrine, his motive is always evil, and usually involves some form of personal gain. For that gain, he willingly separates himself from brethren of proven faithfulness, and takes for new associates men of proven unfaithfulness.

WELCOME FRIENDS! — We welcome our friends from so many places. It is our prayer that your time with us and the gospel preached to you during our Bible conference has been and will be blessed of God to your souls’ everlasting benefit.

• There will be no services here tonight or Tuesday night.
• I am scheduled to preach Wednesday night for TODDS ROAD GRACE CHURCH in Lexington, KY, where Bro. Todd Nibert is pastor.
• COLLEGE GROVE GRACE CHURCH, College Grove, TN, will host its annual sovereign grace Bible conference October 22-24. Bro. Chris Cunningham is the host pastor (Telephone: 615-368-7853 — Email: gracetn@united.net).

Sinners Saved by God’s Decree — Don Fortner
(Tune: #99 — Hark the Herald Angels Sing — 77.77D)

1. Sinners saved by God’s decree, let us praise our Surety!
Souls redeemed, your voices raise, sing your great Redeemer’s praise!
Jesus, Savior, holy Lamb, we will praise Your worthy name!
You have washed us in Your blood, made us kings and priests to God

2. Worthy is the Lamb of God, Who has bought us with His blood!
Grace and glory in Him shine, matchless mercy, love divine!
Wondrous love indeed is this! — He made our transgressions His!
Christ, for sinners, sin was made; and our debt in full He paid!

3. Saved unto the utmost now, Jesus, Savior, Lord, we bow,
Bow to worship at Your throne, bow to sing Your praise alone.
Righteous are Your ways and true. Endless praises are Your due!
Sinners saved by God’s decree, we will praise our Surety!

Bro. Scott Richardson’s Last Public Comments

During the last public worship service he was able to attend (the Wednesday before the Lord called him to glory) our dear friend, Pastor Scott Richardson, read the following to the saints at Fairmont, WV, whom he served faithfully for over 50 years. His successor and pastor, Bro. Marvin Stalnaker, sent a copy of Bro. Richardson’s text to me. It read...

“I’ve come across something that helped me and I want to pass it on to you. We understand more about what heaven is and will be to us, by what it is not, and will not be. There’ll be no more sin.

No more darkness. No more pain.
No more sorrow. No more jails.
No more crying. No more war.
No more sickness. No more heartache.
No more dying in a ditch. No more fear.
No more confusion. No more lacking anything.
No more vanity. No more waiting.
No more going astray. No more crooked roads.
No more reproach. No more affliction.
No more darkness. No more trouble.
No more curse. No more dishonoring God.
Our name will no more be called Jacob. We’ll be the children of the Living God.”

Then, Bro. Scott Read Revelation 22:3-5 — “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” Then, he said, “and no more birthdays!”

The Union of Christ and His People
C. H. Spurgeon

It often happens, in the Psalms, that you can scarcely tell whether it is David, or the Lord Jesus, or both of them, to whom the writer is referring. Oftentimes you lose sight of David altogether, and are quite certain that he is not there; while, at other times, the words seem equally suited either to David as the type, or to Jesus as the antitype. I think that this fact is very instructive to us. It is as the Holy Ghost intended, even in those ancient times, to let God’s saints know that there is a mysterious union between Christ and His people, so that almost all things which may be said concerning Him may be said, also, concerning those who are in Him. They are so completely one, they are so intimately united in bonds of mystic, vital, conjugal, eternal union, that it would not be possible always to keep the sayings concerning them apart.”

“He hath made Him to be Sin for Us!”
2 Corinthians 5:21

This is a plainly stated and clearly revealed point of gospel truth. It is both a matter of great importance and great consolation. It sets before us the mysterious wonder of redemption and the wisdom and glory of God in accomplishing it. Yet, as clearly revealed, as honoring to God our Savior as it is, many violently oppose this plain declaration of Holy Scripture: — “He hath made him to be sin for us.” Why? What possible reason can they give? What is their motive?

Either Or

Those questions I cannot answer; but I ask you to consider for a moment the horrid possibility that the thing here revealed by God the Holy Spirit is not true, that Christ Jesus our Lord was not made sin for us…

Either the Lord Jesus was made sin for us and our sins were transferred to him, or he did not bear our sins in his body on the tree, as the Book says he did, but only the consequences and effects of them. — Either the Lord Jesus was made sin for us and our sins were transferred to him, or he did not really bear the consequences and effects of them.

I mean by that, either he was made sin for us and our sins were transferred to him, or he did not bear the penalty of them. The shame and spitting, the beating and buffeting, the meanness and mockery our holy Savior endured at the hands of the Jews and Roman soldiers, the cross, the nails and the thorns were a very small part of the reward of our transgressions. The principal part of the punishment of sin consists in a sense of guilt and of divine wrath: but neither of these could Immanuel have endured, unless he was made sin, unless he bore our sins themselves.

Either the Lord Jesus was made sin for us and our sins were transferred to him, or our sins are still our sins and justice finds them upon us still! The infinite justice of God still finds guilt upon us and upon the saints in glory, too, and must find them upon us forever. If that were the case, justice would still require satisfaction and mercy could be bestowed only at the expense of righteousness. But, thank God, that is not the case!

His Glory

Here is the great glory of God revealed in the salvation of his elect, as it is set forth in this Book. — The guilt of our sins, and our sins themselves were forever put away by the sacrifice of his darling Son, washed away completely by the blood of the Lamb!

Here is the glory of his righteousness: — Not only that that he removed the curse, but the cause of the curse too. — “For as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Our Savior was made sin for us, and our sins were so completely transferred to him, that if he had not conquered and destroyed them, they would have destroyed him. His resurrection is proof that both he and all for whom he died are freed from sin (1 Peter 4:1-2).
