Praise the Christ of the Cross

Tune to NEAR THE CROSS 7.6.7.6. with Refrain

Words by Jim Byrd

1. I was hopeless, dead in sin,
Fallen from God’s favor;
With no righteousness to claim,
Lost without a Savior.

CHORUS:
Praise the Christ of the cross,
I am His forever;
He has saved me by His grace,
From Him none can sever.

2. When the time of love arrived,
God sent forth His power;
Washed me in the fount of blood,
Cleansed me in that hour.
CHORUS

3. Now I rest on Christ alone,
With no fear of dying;
Jesus is my righteousness,
All on Him relying.
CHORUS

4. Do you know this blessed Lord?
No one else can rescue;
May He draw you to Himself,
Evermore to save you.
CHORUS

Verse of the Week:

"Praise ye the LORD.

Praise O ye servants of the LORD,

praise the name of the LORD.

Blessed be the name of the LORD

from this time forth and for evermore.

From the rising of the sun

unto the going down of the same

the LORD’S name is to be praised."

(Psalm 113:1-3)

What an honor it is for poor, unworthy sinners to gather in this place . We thank our Redeemer for the promise that "where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20). We come to sing His praises, call upon Him for blessings, read His Word, and hear His glorious gospel proclaimed. At the close of the message, we will have the privilege of partaking of His Supper. "This do in remembrance of Me" (Luke 22:19). We will eat the bread remembering our Savior’s body which was wounded and bruised for our sins. "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh" (1 Timothy 3:16). In that flesh He lived, suffered, died, arose and ascended to redeem the people of His choice from all iniquity (1 Timothy 3:16; Titus 2:14). And we will drink of the cup remembering His blood which He shed unto His death. "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). Believing that justice has been satisfied by the substitutionary death of Christ, it is with confidence that we come to God today to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Let all who love His gospel render praise, glory and adoration to our Lord. "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker" (Psalms 95:6).

In Christ

The decree of Election stands upon an unchangeable foundation, to wit, that Rock of ages, "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). As the first Adam was the foundation stone in the decree of creation, so the last Adam, even Jesus, is the foundation stone in the decree of election. God hath blessed us in Him, yea, and we shall be blessed. He hath chosen us in Him, pardoned us in Him, sealed us in Him, built us up and completed us in Him; "According to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began" (2 Timothy 1:9). All those acts of grace are said to be in Christ, who hath blest us in Christ (Ephesians 1:3), chosen us in Him (Ephesians 1:4), pardoned us, "in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7), "in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed" (Ephesians 1:13), "rooted and built up in Him" (Colossians 2:7): and ye are "complete in Him" (Colossians 2:10). --Christopher Ness

The Lord’s Supper - Past, Present, Future

1. PAST - "This do in remembrance of me" (1 Corinthians 11:24). As we receive the elements of the Lord’s Supper, we do so with thanksgiving as we are mindful of the past when Christ came and accomplished the work of our salvation.

2. PRESENT - "Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup" (1 Corinthians 11:28). While this is a present examination that must be performed daily, it is not about assessing our lives or works. And it is not about a self-evaluation to see if we think we have been faithful enough to qualify to take part. The examination is to the object of our faith and confidence. Am I, right now, resting in, depending upon, and looking to the Lord Jesus Christ alone for all of my righteousness and acceptance with God? "Give diligence to make your calling and election sure" (2 Peter 1:10). If so, I am allowed to partake; if not, I better leave these things alone!

3. FUTURE - "As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come" (1 Corinthians 11:26). We partake of this memorial with the confidence that He Who gave Himself for us, will soon return and, as He pledged, "receive you unto Myself" (John 14:3).
