Genesis 24

In Genesis, chapter 24, Abraham sends his eldest servant on a mission to find a bride for Abraham’s son Isaac. He must go to the land where the man of faith was born. His servant would be made aware before he left that this work would be fully dependant on the Lord, whose presence was sent before him, and yet absolutely necessary for him to go and seek and bring again this woman to his master. (Genesis 24: 1-7) It was strictly forbidden for Isaac to go personally to her. She would be convinced by the servants’ testimony alone and would willingly submit herself and all that she had into his hands (Genesis 24: 8). With a small escort of fellow servants Elieser journeyed to a place where he was virtually unknown and sought for a woman that could only be known by her faith. If she would not be willing to follow the servant back then he was free from his duty concerning her. Everything concerning this work was provided. So sure was Abraham in the success of this work that he sent with his servant tokens of the fathers’ love for the bride.

Without a doubt this is one of the clearest pictures of the gospel ministry given in the Old Testament scriptures. In the land where saving faith was manifested we seek for a bride for Gods heir. Let us then be assured, as was the faithful servant, that both Gods presence and our own is necessary for the work. Let us give ourselves to this work seeing it is the business of our masters’ heart and therefore our own.

And when in Gods good providence, she is brought before us at the time of drawing, may we be enabled to exalt the Heir and his Father in such a way as to convince her to leave all she knows and follow us back to Him.
