Religion: choosing between the good and the better

Sometimes the false and the true are hard to tell apart. You look at some people and some teachings and some churches, alone, and they start to look and sound pretty good. The key here is "alone". Like if I held up a reasonably straight twig and asked your assessment of it. You'd say it was straight. Then I'd hold up a pencil next to it and ask you to re-assess.

Straight is not meant to be relative. Straight is straight.

But God’s people are well named sheep. SO vulnerable. SO open. SO unwilling to get out the other stick and look at it.

I'm not innocent along these lines. I’ve been in Romanism against my will and by choice. It took a John Macarthur Bible lesson to remind me what I was missing. But I had been there seven years.

I've been in a cult called the children of God. Fundamental and sound. They found out where a bunch of us Christians were living and showed up at the door one day. They knew their Bible and all the faults of our individual churches. Soon they were in. Then in charge. Then asking some of us to leave. Gratefully I asked too many questions and got booted.

I've been in fundamentalism. And in places that were fundamental in all but one respect: they believed miracles could happen today. Both groups told me I was not allowed to believe both things, the Bible and miracles. Bye bye Bobby again.

Nevertheless I have continued to bring alongside the straight stick, the Word of God, the Spirit of God, the life of Jesus, the accounts in the Book of Acts. Not too much worried about what men say.

All the way along our journey we must keep doing this.

Now, the enemy will try to convince us at every step that we have it all, that we have arrived. We have Christ’s religion. But we need to compare ourselves to those who have gone ahead of us.

Truth as it ripens, becomes more and more separate, not only from the false, but from other truth.

As you grow you will be asked to decide between something very good, and something a little bit better. Your choices will decide how much you grow. You can squeak through life with second best I guess, but that was never the Father’s plan.

There is in John a test of what message is true and what is false. "Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God. Every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God This is the spirit of antichrist."

Churches that preach the truth about Jesus are the true church, the true religion. Period.

That does not say that every one of those churches and every one of their members are walking in the fullness of the truth. There’s always more. More options, more choices, more possible dead-ends. The challenge is to hear the Voice of the Master when these crossroads appear. He'll be there.
