How Shall I Know?

In Genesis 15: 8 Abraham asked the Lord “…Whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?” God had already given him strong assurance in the preceding verse so that his question seems out of order.

He told his servant that he was the Lord that brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give him the land to inherit. Do we need more confidence than this? He is the Lord! If He is sovereign over all then He can give what He will to whom He will when He will and none can object or oppose Him.

Further, He reminds him of his calling. His calling was effectual, particular, and undeserved. His calling resulted in his being where he was. God snatched him out of Ur as a brand from the burning and brought him in sovereign power and grace into blessing and fellowship.

Yet, despite these things, Abraham sought more evidence. Why? What would cause this man who was strong in faith to ask for assurance? I believe it was because Abraham began to see himself in the light of God’s greatness and glory. David brought in Mephibosheth and told him that he would be spared and treated as royalty because a covenant was made on his behalf long before he was born. Standing in the presence of the King, seeing the glory of his house, and considering himself and the history of his father he cried out, “What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?” (II Samuel 9: 8). It was not so much a question of God’s veracity or ability but of his own unworthiness. How can such wiggling maggots as we are dare to believe that the living God has called us to be sons?

Here is how the Lord answered his servants’ request. He commanded him to take the sacrifice in all of it particular forms and lay them out before him on the altar and then in an experience of grace made him to know the horror of a great darkness. In the midst of that horror of darkness he was made to see the burning lamp of God’s spirit enlightening as it moves through the pieces. The only thing that can convince a man, who is convinced of sin, that he can be an heir of God is to see his worthiness in the person and work of God’s Son.
