Turn Your Radio On?

My father pastored almost a decade during the mid-1900s deep in the heart of Appalachia. Freewillism was very prevalent in that region, as evidenced by its great number of Free Will Baptists, Campbellites, Pentecostalists, Holy Rollers – and yes, snake handlers and poison drinkers who believed they were prophesied in Mark 16:17f.

One of the favorite hymn writers of Appalachian Freewillers back then was a certain Campbellite whose hymns include “Turn Your Radio On”, “I’ll Fly Away”, “I Dreamed I Met Mother and Daddy”, “Will It Do, Precious Lord?”, “Will the Angels Play Their Harps for Me?”, “They’ll Welcome Me Back Home”, and “Are You Almost Decided?” As you should readily discern from such titles, he was to those Freewillers what a Newton or Toplady is to us who believe in sovereign grace.

The hymn from his pen I remember most vividly from my youth is “Surely I Will”, for it was very popular in Appalachia. It contains the following lines: If working and praying has any reward,
Then surely some morning, I’ll meet my dear Lord;
With God as my pilot, I’ll climb the high hill,
If anyone makes it all the way home, then surely I will.
I was at that time not a believer in Christ. But I had heard from my father enough of Bible exposition and gospel preaching to spot theological errors in that song. I readily understood why he thoroughly disdained it.

Christ was pleased to save me some years later. I have from that time realized that I would be very hard pressed to find a song that more honestly sets forth the means by which freewill religionists purport to achieve the aspirations of their souls than that which boasts “Surely I will!”

And may I be found singing: My working and praying will earn no reward;
Yet surely some morning, I’ll meet my dear Lord.
With Christ as my Shepherd, I’ll climb Zion’s hill;
Since Christ says He’ll take me all the way home, then surely He will.
