HOW DID JACOB PREVAIL?
Genesis 32: 24-30; Hosea 12: 4
Hosea says that by his strength Jacob had power with God and over (with) the Angel (the Son of God) and prevailed. How does a sinner have this strength? What is this strength? In Genesis we read that the Lord came to Jacob and wrestled with Jacob. When the Lord saw that Jacob prevailed not with him then the Lord touched Jacob revealing to Jacob the Power and Wisdom of God. The effectual result was that when the Lord began to withdraw himself then Jacob held to the Lord, pleading for the Lord to be merciful to him; he confessed he was, "Jacob, supplanter, a sinner in need of mercy." That is exactly how Hosea says Jacob prevailed, "he wept, and made supplication unto him." (Hos 12: 4; Ps 34: 18; 51: 17.) The sinner's strength with God and with men as a prince is when God reveals our own utter weakness and his glory in the face of Christ Jesus so that our power and strength ceases to be ourselves and becomes Christ Jesus, the Power and Wisdom of God, the Prince of peace. Genesis reads, "And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."
THE FIRSTBORN IS COMING
Jacob had heard that Esau, the elder brother whom Jacob had robbed, was coming with a multitude of men to take vengeance. Have you heard that Jesus, the Firstborn among brethren, is returning to take vengeance on his enemies? But before Esau came, the Lord came to Jacob, made him confess his sin and Jacob believed on the Lord. Then when Esau came, we find a glorious picture of the reception that shall be between the Lord Jesus Christ and all the children of God our Father who put their trust in him: "And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men....And [Jacob] passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept." (Gen 33: 1, 3, 4.)
A Local Church
By Henry Mahan
A local church is a body of brothers and sisters in Christ. We are one family. One life is ours, one love is ours, and one objective (to know more of and to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and to be found in His righteousness) is ours. This is the comfort and strength of all, that we are all one with Christ in God's sight. We cannot properly minister the Gospel of Christ without each other. One cannot say, "My presence or absence will not be noticed because I don't preach, teach, pray publicly nor lead singing." Your presence in the house of God to worship Him is both desired and much needed. You are a comfort and encouragement to other brethren. Another cannot say, "My gift will not be missed because I cannot give as much as some." All of God's people should give whenever and whatever they can give as the Lord blesses them. No gift is too small. What may seem small is great for the cause of Christ. The point is this: We are a family, a body, and the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you." All brethren are equally loved of God and equally needed by one another.
Love Serves
By Todd Nibert
Our Lord teaches us that the one who is truly great is also the one who serves. It is interesting to observe how much we are concerned about how others serve us. We are quick to find fault with their lack of service toward us, and consequently, their lack of "Christian character." I suppose it is because we really believe ourselves to be great and are offended at the lack of service others provide us.
This I know--love serves. Self-love seeks to be served, but love serves. In all of our relationships, we should seek to serve, and not to be served! Am I a server or one who seeks to be served?
