Luke 19:1-10

The story of Zacchaeus is a truthful picture of lost, unsaved men. But even more so it is a beautiful picture of a Sovereign Savior. Zacchaeus had heard that Christ was coming through Jericho and his curiosity got the best of him. He was so little that he climbed up in a Sycamore tree because he was too small to see over the people.

Dear friends, that describes you and me truthfully. We are but small insignificant creatures. We are so short of the holiness and righteousness of God that we cannot see. Yet unlike Zacchaeus we endeavor to climb to no avail. We try to climb to see Christ by our own works and righteousness. But Romans 3:23 tells us our dilemma. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. That’s right! We come way SHORT of what God requires, in order for us to climb on our own to be reconciled to Him. We come short of the Glory of God, which is the perfect righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Zacchaeus thought he was climbing that tree in order to see Christ. But the truth of the matter is that Christ, before the foundation of the world, had determined this very day to come to see him. Christ told him in verse 9, “that this day salvation is come to your house.” How did Christ know to look up and see Zacchaeus? That is an easy answer if you know the God of the Bible. He is a Sovereign Savior. God had purposed in His Divine providence that, that Sycamore tree would be planted in that exact spot. Zacchaeus was not waving his arms and making noise to be seen. Verse 5 says that Christ looked up because that was exactly where Zacchaeus was predestined to be. Christ told him to make haste and come down and that is exactly what we must do. Come down from our pride, self sufficiency to the foot of the cross. Oh what a Mighty and Sovereign God we serve!
