An Empty Profession

James 2: 14-26

This book of James primarily deals with the uselessness of our empty professions of faith. An empty profession of faith is one that has no power to persevere trials and afflictions. An empty profession is just a hollow shell of religion that goes unchanged inside while being whitewashed outside. An empty profession is one that boasts of salvation but has no desire or will to do the things of God. An empty profession has no life and therefore cannot produce the fruit of life. To this kind of profession James asks this question, “What doth it profit my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?” (James 2:14). Can this kind of faith save him? Does this faith speak to his need? To illustrate his point he gives an example of a situation of need. Someone we meet is in dire need of clothing and food and we go to them and say, “be warmed and filled, it is my desire for you to be clothed and fed so go and have a good day.” But I do not address their needs. I sent them away as needy as they first came. If faith is simply an acknowledgement of doctrine and a feeling of knowing that God’s will is for me to be blessed but leaves me as needy as he found me; then my faith has no profit to my situation.

True faith is an evidence of life. Where there is faith there is light, life, hope, and good works. Actually the good works produced by faith are out of thanksgiving because all of our needs have been taken care of. We needed life and he quickened us, we needed forgiveness and he pardoned us, we needed righteousness and he clothed us, and we needed representation and he stood for us.

Faith is the master grace. It is the conduit through which all the other graces flow. “By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2: 8-10).” “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? (James 2: 20)” It has no life, no power of God, no new creation within. It is not grafted into the true vine and therefore cannot produce true fruit. “For as the body without the Spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also (James 2: 26)”
