To a soldier going into an ancient battle, his helmet was very important. A wound to the head would be a destructive blow. But with his helmet on he can walk with his head raised high without fear of it being chopped off.
The helmet of salvation is in knowing that salvation is of the Lord. To defeat a child of God, one must first defeat God. To cut off his head is to destroy the Lord of all principality and power.
