This document contains the 10 commandments, Exodus 20:1-17, only as a guideline to acknowledge our wrongdoings and lay it before God, for whatever is brought to light cannot hide in the darkness any longer. Through repentance God can heal our wounds in order for us to walk in greater victory, (James 5:14-20). This is not to put us under the law, as we have received grace, (Galatians 5:16-25, Romans 6:14, 1 John 5:1-5), for God's Spirit has come to write the Law on our hearts - so that we obey Him in love as a response to our relationship with Him, in gratitude for the grace we received, not because we fear punishment: "I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each man teach his neighbour and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more", Jeremiah 31:33b-34.
"When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires...They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when...God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus", Romans 2:14-16.
The following prayer of repentance has been written according to that which was laid upon our hearts. We want to encourage you to study the quoted scriptures and each of these in context, for in writing this we are still human, but the Word is a two-edged sword, (Hebrews 5:12-13). Please ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind any sins that He wants you to bring to the Father in your prayer of repentance (ROMANS 8:12-14). His throne is a throne of Mercy and Grace, therefore we can enter into His presence boldly, knowing that His Son paid the price for our sins (Hebrews 4:14-16):
"... in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! Yes, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But you must continue in the things which you have learned..." 2 Timothy 3:1-14.
OUR PRAYER: Matthew 22: 37-39
A) LOVE GOD ABOVE ALL ELSE
YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME
Father, we come to You and admit that we have loved other things more than You. We have spent our time and money on idols and our thoughts have strayed far away from You. We have showed how little we love You by straying from Your ways. We have showed how little we love you when we stopped holding fast to You. Instead we cling to things that have no value - pride, power, money, popularity, ambition.
We have loved money and power more than You. We have loved our possessions more than You. We have loved sport, food, drink, drugs, entertainment, music, certain relationships, public figures, our personal wellbeing, jobs, hobbies and even this country (South Africa) more than we love You.
We have placed our faith and trust in Luck and Chance rather than in You. We are a nation filled with fears and superstitions, which is idolatry. We admit that we would rather do things to please people, than to please You. We admit that we fear man more than we fear You. We admit that we need to come to You and place You first in our lives and make You our First Love again (Psalm 145:20, Revelations 2:4-5; 1 John 5:21). We ask that You, through Your Spirit, will make us ambitious only for more of You.
