“Thou hast wrought for me to entitle me to heaven; and thou hast wrought in me to fit me for heaven.” Ambrose Serle

I am preaching this morning for Grace Baptist Church in Taylor, AR, where Bro. Darvin Pruitt is pastor. I plan to preach tonight and tomorrow night for our friends in Wichita Falls, TX. Bros.

Who Shall Dispute Jehovah’s Right? — Don Fortner
(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear — CM)

Who shall dispute Jehovah’s right
To universal rule?
All who trust Him in this delight: —
Their Father’s in control!

Rejoice, my soul, your Father reigns;
Heav’n, earth and hell, shall know
That what His sov’reign will ordains,
No pow’r can overthrow!

All worlds obey my .Father’s nod,
And His decrees fulfil;
The arm of Israel’s cov’nant God,
Performs His sov’reign will.

Then all is well, tho’ man complains,
Through ignorance and pride;
Since God my Father ever reigns,
I’ll in His love confide.

The Son of God assumed our nature without sin, that he might be made sin for us. Thus, he who was not, and could never be a sinner, died as the greatest of sinners, when “the Lord laid upon him the iniquity us all,” all his elect. He was a Lamb without spot, fit to be slain for our atonement and a mighty Scapegoat, who, going off laden with our iniquities, was able to bear them away into everlasting forgetfulness!

An Ark Made of Gopher Wood

“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.” (Genesis 6: 14)

Gopher wood is wood that is cut and shaped with an axe. The ark of God was not to be a make shift raft. It was not to be anything a man could do himself, by whatever means he could find. The ark was a vessel given of God’s design with a purpose and end. Every piece must be cut and shaped to an exact specification; every board and beam hued for a certain place and a necessary end. Though God told him in general what this vessel would be; he did not give him all the details at once. The ark was a revelation of one hundred and twenty years.

I see in this ark a picture of the ministry of Christ to a condemned world. God did not give this revelation directly to the seven other souls he intended to save but chose one man and through him made his will and way known (Romans 10:13-17, 1 Corinthians 1:18-24). God selected a certain place to do the work; and that is where his servant set before the people each piece in the detail of God’s revelation to him. Those who heard him preach took the pieces, followed his instructions and joined one to another until at last there stood before their eyes a great vessel sufficient to save all that God had purposed to save.

This is the life of a true minister of the gospel. He is not involved in all the petty issues of the world but taken up completely with this one task. He spends his days in the tall timber of God’s word selecting the right tree for the right purpose. Then, according to the holy unction of God, he chips away at the pieces, until at last he can set before those who hear each piece of the vessel of mercy God purposed to provide. Those who hear him receive the pieces from his hands and see for themselves as the vessel comes to its completion. Seeing for themselves, they are persuaded of its sufficiency and willingly walk through the door and wait on God to shut them in. — Pastor Darvin Pruitt

Has God the Holy Spirit caused you to know your corruption? O may he enable you now to believe, the glad tidings of the gospel!

It is true; you are a sinner, base and vile. That is the first lesson in the large book of humiliation you must read all the days of your life. But Christ died for sinners like you. He died for every sinner who comes to God by him, for the very vilest of sinners, and saves them by his grace. He saved Mary Magdalene the harlot, Matthew the publican, Paul the persecutor, Peter the swearer, liar and denier of his Master, the malefactor on the cross, who had been a thief and a murderer, and ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands more like them. — And he still has the same power, will, mercy and grace to save!

He saves graciously and freely, without condition or qualification, and saves forever all who come to God by him. Yes, God’s salvation is all of grace, free grace, from beginning to end.

“Jehovah-jireh”

“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” (Genesis 22:14)

The name by which God revealed himself to Abraham at Mt. Moriah, Jehovah-jireh, might be translated by three expressions: “the Lord will see”, “the Lord will provide” and “the Lord will be seen”. However the name is translated, it expresses the idea of God seeing and being seen. For God, to see is to provide. By this name, Jehovah-jireh, the Triune God, the Lord Jehovah assures us that he sees our needs and faithfully provides for our needs, and that he will be seen in the provision he makes. How this name of our God ought to encourage our hearts to trust him and to trust his wise and good providence! — But the thing that inspired Abraham to raise up this memorial to God’s honor was the substitution of the ram to die in the place of his son, Isaac, and Isaac’s deliverance from death by that substitute. Jehovah-jireh is a name of our God which describes his saving grace in Jehovah-Jesus, our ever blessed Christ.

The Lord will See

Jehovah-jireh means “the Lord will see.” — Our Father, from eternity, saw the need into which we would fall by the sin of Adam in the garden and by our own iniquity, transgression and sin in time. In infinite wisdom, mercy and love he provided his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be our Substitute in the covenant of grace. When the fulness of time was come, God met our need by sending the Lord Jesus to die at Calvary. Then, when by his Spirit the Lord God created a need in our hearts for Christ, causing us to seek him, he gave his Son to us. Today, by his free grace, God gives his Son to all who need him. — Do you need him?

The Lord will Provide

Jehovah-jireh means “the Lord will provide.” — Jehovah-jireh was Abraham’s testimony to the goodness and grace of God in providing a ram to die in Isaac’s place. We use this name for the same purpose. It is our testimony of praise to God for providing Christ to be our Substitute. Jehovah-jireh also implies that our God, who gave us his Son, will freely give us all things in his Son (Romans 8:32).

The Lord will be Seen

Jehovah-jireh also means “the Lord will be seen.” — “In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” God is seen in the sacrifice of his dear Son at Mt. Calvary. And God shall be seen in the face of his Provision, Christ Jesus, upon Mt. Zion in heaven. All this was included in Abraham’s prophecy. All who see God in Christ, the crucified Substitute, who died in our place upon Mt. Calvary, shall see God face to face in Christ Jesus, who is himself Jehovah-jireh! — The Lord who will see, — the Lord who will provide, — the Lord who will be seen!
