When preachers start adjusting their message, the reasons are always evil. The man who seeks and obtains a message from God delivers it as it was received. He would never dream of adjusting it for anyone or for any reason.
Amazing Grace — John Newton
(As Newton originally published it in the Olney Hymns in 1779)
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound) That sav’d a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev’d; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believ’d!
Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis’d good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease; I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who call’d me here below, Will be for ever mine.
All Things are in Our Savior’s Hands
“The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.”
(John 3:35)
All things have been put into the hands and under the feet of our most glorious Christ, the God-man, as our Mediator. — "Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” (Hebrews 2:8-9)
All things have always been in his hands and under his feet as God. These statements refer not to our Savior in his absolute divinity, but in his office capacity as the God-man, our Mediator. He who is God the Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity, is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. As such he is the Owner, Ruler and Disposer of all things. Consequently, as God, nothing could be put in his hands and under his feet. God the Son is in every sense one with and equal with God the Father. That is the doctrine of the Trinity as it is revealed in 1 John 5:7.
All things have been put into Christ’s hands and under his feet for him to rule over and dispose of for the salvation of his people, as the God-man, our Mediator. Our Savior said in John 17:2, "Thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him." In Romans 14:9 we read, "For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living."
By virtue of his obedience to the Father in his great work of redemption, the Lord Jesus Christ took his seat as a man, as Immanuel, as God in human flesh, upon the throne of heaven, exactly as the prophets said he would. He sat down in glory because his work was finished, according to the will and purpose of the triune God.
In Hebrews 10:5-14 we are given the Holy Spirit’s interpretation of David’s prophecy in Psalm 40. Because it was not possible for sin to be put away in any other way, Christ came to die for chosen sinners, according to the will of God. With his mission accomplished, having redeemed those whom he came to redeem, having obtained eternal redemption for us with his own blood, our Mediator sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.
The opening verses of the Book of Hebrews state the same thing. Read Hebrews 1:1-9. Rejoice! — All things are in the hands of him who loved us and gave himself for us!
Yonder in heaven, seated on his lofty throne, from which he rules the universe, is God in our flesh. His throne is called “the throne of grace.” And he bids us come boldly to his throne “that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
All Things Are For Your Sake
“For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:15)
If you are a believer, if you are a child of God, if you trust the Lord Jesus Christ alone as your Lord and Savior, this statement is true of you, and I want you to know it. If you are not a believer, if you do not trust the Son of God, it will do you no good to claim God’s promises to his children. But if you are the Lord’s, the promise is yours. Read it, hear it, and rejoice in it. — "For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God."
“All things are for your sakes.” — Carry that blessed promise just as far as your heart’s imagination will allow you. I assure you, your widest, highest thoughts are indescribably less than God’s infinite promise! He who is my heavenly Father is “God that performeth all things for me” (Psalm 57:2). What a God, what a Savior we have! He “performeth all things for us!” Imagine that! Can you get hold of that? He “performeth all things for us!” Whatever has been, is now, or shall be hereafter is for my sake and for your sake!
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose…If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:28). No one and nothing, in heaven, earth or hell, can be against us with success, if God be for us!
In 1 Corinthians 3:21 we are told “all things are yours!” Again, I say, if you are a believer, if you trust the Lord Jesus Christ, this is God’s word to you, to you personally, and to all believers collectively: — All things spiritual are yours. All grace is yours! All the blessings of God and his grace are yours. All the privileges of grace are yours. All the servants of God and all their labors are yours. All things temporal are yours to use and enjoy for the glory of God and one another’s good. All things heavenly are yours. All the angels of God, the throne of God, God our Father, the Son of God and the Spirit of God, all are yours, if you are Christ’s! All things eternal are yours as well. All the glory of heaven which the Father has given to Christ as our Mediator, Christ has given to us. He said to the Father, — "The glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one" (John 17:22). All the glory of the all-glorious Son of God is the free gift of his grace to every believer!
Take these three gospel facts with you through the remainder of your days in this world of woe. They will enable you to laugh at Satan’s rage and cope with a frowning world. — “All things are for your sakes.” “All things work together for good” to God’s elect. “All things are yours!”
