SOVEREIGN GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH
Of Princeton, New Jersey
Matthew 6: 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32: (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34: Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

EARTHLY AND HEAVENLY TREASURE
Matthew 6: 19-21
We might categorize earthly treasures as religious treasures and temporal treasures. Throughout the 5th chapter, the Lord taught his children the difference between the religious treasures of the earthly man and heavenly treasures of the believer. Our Lord just finished warning us not to covet the praise of men in religious exercises. Now, our Lord warns us not to set our affection on earthly treasures.
Usually, proportionate to the joy that earthly treasure brings there is a worry and fear that they will disappear. The little moth eats away earthly treasure. Rust will eat away earthly treasure. Thieves will break through and steal earthly treasure. Setting our affection on earthly treasure will result in a miserly, greedy, covetous and worrisome spirit which chokes away the word and makes men unprofitable.
The heavenly treasure of the believer is Christ our King and his righteousness. We possess all things in Christ Jesus; we are joint heirs with Christ; the inheritance of Christ our everlasting Father is our inheritance; the Lord is our portion. The believer's heavenly treasure is an incorruptible inheritance, a pure inheritance gotten by the pure grace and work of Christ our Righteousness. This treasure will not fade away but is reserved in heaven by God for each of those Christ redeemed (1 Pe 1:4.)
LAY UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN?
What does our Lord mean by this? How does a believer lay up treasures in heaven? We do not earn heaven or even rewards in heaven. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone by Christ alone. Our reward is Christ Jesus himself and all spiritual blessings in him freely given to us. The Lord just finished speaking of alms-giving, providing for the poor. Our Lord Jesus Christ was rich and yet became poor to make desperately poor sinners like us rich. The Lord Jesus delights for his children to show the same grace to poor sinners as he did to us. If our treasure is Christ Jesus, one way the believer will manifest it is by a gracious spirit toward the poor. When providing from a heart that rejoices that Christ has fully accomplished the salvation of such poor wretches as we, the Lord who is the full provision of all our needs before holy God insures us that he shall provide our lesser needs as sure as our salvation in glory (Lk 12:33; 1 Tim 6: 18, 19.)
CURE FOR CARE
Henry Mahan
1. "We have entirely too many fears for a people to whom the Lord has said, ‘Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee, yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness'" (Is 41:10.)
2. "We have far too many doubts and fears concerning God's mercy, love, and grace for a people to whom the Lord has said, ‘Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out...I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish'" (Jn 6: 37; 10: 28.)
3. "We spend entirely too much time grumbling and complaining about our trials and troubles for a people to whom the Lord has said, ‘In the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world'" (Jn 16: 33.)
4. "We have entirely too much attachment to this world and to this present life for a people who are looking for a city whose Builder and Maker is God (Heb. 11:8-10)." "We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens" (2 Cor. 5:1).
FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD
James 2: 20-26
The LORD promised that through his son, Isaac, he would give Abraham children more in number than the stars of the sky. God promised that through Abraham's only son Isaac, his King and Savior would be born. Then after giving Abraham these promises on which his eternal soul and the soul of all those spiritual brethren hung, the LORD told Abraham to take that very son Isaac and offer him up as a sacrifice to God. Abraham did it--"Accounting that God was able to raise up, even from the dead" (Heb 11: 19.) Rahab, the immoral harlot, patiently trusted God facing death for receiving the spies because she trusted "God was able to raise up, even from the dead." It is not "faith without morality is dead", it is "faith without patient endurance which believes God is able to raise up" is dead.
FAITH IS SOMETIMES HINDERED BY THE FLESH
Acts 20: 8-12
Sometimes faith may appear dead. It is not the fault of the Holy Spirit, perish the thought. Like the many lights in the upper chamber, the Light of Christ is always shining. The word of Christ is going forth. It is not the new man of the spirit for the spirit is willing. But it is our own sinful flesh that is the culprit (Mt 26:41.)
Yet, there is never a possibility that the believer's faith shall fail, not because of us, but because of Christ our Intercessor. (Lk 22: 31, 32.) Like Paul went down and fell on the young man and embraced him, saying, "Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him" so our Redeemer ever lives to make intercession for his people (Ro 8: 34-37.)
Living for me, living for me
Up in the skies he is living for me
Daily he's pleading and praying for me
All because Jesus is living for me
The people were all comforted when they beheld the young man alive. But who do you think was comforted most? The young man! Even so our Lord comforts us and causes us to cherish him all the more.
