Equal Yet Different

Genesis1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

When God created Adam and Eve, He created them male and female. They were created equal in innocence, in intelligence, in beauty, in privileges. Both had full access to the Garden of Eden. They were equal in many ways. However, God made them different in many ways.

There is a physical difference: the man was made to be masculine in order to provide and protect his home; the woman was made to bear children and to care for and guide the home. She was made to be feminine.

God made a difference in headship; Adam was made to be the head of the woman. Adam was made responsible by God, his creator, to be the leader in the home. He was responsible to provide and protect; he was to lead in the worship of God in his home. Eve was made to be a help mate to Adam. She was not to be a slave nor a hindrance, but a help mate. She was to love and cherish her husband that God gave her by taking care of her husband and their home. She was to guide her children in the fear of the Lord. She was to be in subjection to her husband even as the church is to be in subjection to Christ.

This worked beautifully until the fall, when the order began to reverse. Now the world, especially in our day, is making men and women equal where God made them different. For example, the world does not recognize God’s order of headship, which places the man at the head in his home, and the woman in submission to her husband. This command of God is despised by the world; even we who believe the gospel find ourselves avoiding this issue. It is an embarrassment today to even mention such an order, let alone practice it in our daily lives.

The world does not understand this order because of its darkness. They do not see that the difference is not because of weakness, but because of order. God made the difference. Whatever weakness there is between the sexes was caused by sin. I know that the world will always despise God’s order. However, in God’s family (The Church) the order is the same as it was in the beginning. Let me close with this thought: A man cannot use the excuse, “she will not let me,” as an excuse before God. Such words will not release his responsibility to be the leader in his home and the loving husband he is to be to his wife and children.

Ephesians 5:22-28 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.”
