The main requirement God has for the kind of worship He desires is that it be ".in spirit and in truth" This was true in the Old Testament times as well, but is emphasized especially in the New Testament, with its emphasis on the internal aspect of worship. Worship must be "in truth" ? it must be in accordance with God's revelation of truth, the Bible. As Jesus said in His high priestly prayer, "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth." (John 17:17). For this reason the elements of worship must be those only which are instituted by the Lord in the Bible. Reformed worship applies the motto Sola Scriptura also for the guidance of the order, forms and content of its worship. Truth is what the Lord uses to save and sanctify His people. And He is best praised when His own preached truth echoes back from the mouths of the gathered congregation in prayer, praise and confession. But the Lord is not satisfied simply to hear the words and "forms" of truth coming from our lips. "This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth, and honours me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." (Mat.15:8) That is why the Lord added to this verse in John 4:23, "in spirit." He wants our worship to come sincerely from our soul. The inner spirit of our being must be involved. This is what happens when the Holy Spirit of God applies the Word of Truth to our hearts. Then an echo of His truth comes from our heart and His Word becomes precious, meaningful, powerful and moves our hearts to truly agree ("Amen" ? cf. Deut.27, I Cor.14:16, I Cor 1:20), and a sincere prayer or song of praise comes from our heart. May our worship today be one which honours the Lord, "in spirit and in truth."
